Write Commands in the Address Bar of your Browser

You probably use the address bar in userr browser to search web pages. Now learn how to use the address bar to capture screenshots, send emails, get videos or even shorten the URLs.You are already familiar with quite a few browser address bar shortcuts. 1. Capture a screenshot – Go to userr browser’s address bar, type aviary.com before the http:// part of the URL and hit Enter. Aviary will immediately capture a full screenshot image of the web page that’s currently open in userr browser – here’s an example.

2. Download videos – If user are like to get a YouTube video, just add deturl.comto the URL (see example) and user’ll be able to save the video in either Flash or Quicktime format. This is a pretty useful option for mobile phones that don’t support the flash player but can play Quicktime.

3. Shrink the address – There are about a million URL shortening services out there but if user want to quickly shrink the URL from the address bar itself, try this – just type bit.ly before the URL and it give user the short form on the next screen.

4. Email a web page – If user want to email a link of the current web page to a contact or to userr own self, here’s a trick. Just type the mailto command in the address bar and this will compose a new message in userr default email program – user can have the URL of the page in either the body of the message or in the subject line itself.

5. Share or bookmark a web page - If user find the above email command a bit scary, here’s something more simple. Go the address bar of userr browser and type smub.it/ just before the URL as in this example. You can then share that page on any social site or even send the link to userr friends via email. A perfect option for mobile phones.

6. Who owns that website – If user want to know the email address and other contact details of the owner of a site, the whois record of that site can sometimes help. To view the whois details of the current site, type whois.domaintools.com/ in the address bar (just before the http:// part) and there user have all the information – see example.

7. Send userrself notes – Futz.me is a free service that lets user email text notes, hyperlinks and even images from the right the address bar of userr browser.

Go to the address bar, type futzme.com/xyz followed by a space (xyz is userr unique username) and anything that’s after the space will be sent to userr email address. If user use Futz.me with a URL that points to an image, the image will be sent user via an email attachment or even through MMS (if user are in the US).

8. Mobile friendly web – If user are reading web pages on a mobile phone, user can easily convert the current page into a mobile friendly version by adding http://mopwn.com/ in front of the URL in userr address bar. Internally, the mopwn service will simply forward userr request to Google Transcoder but it’s still very handy.

9. When the default is not Google – When user type a search phrase in the address bar of userr browser, the query gets executed using the default search engine which is Google in both Firefox and Google Chrome (factory settings).

Now if user are using IE with Bing or have manually changed the default to something else, here’s how user can still query Google from the address bar without changing any of the current settings. Go to the address bar and type gog.is followed by the search terms. For instance, gog.is/free,techno will show Google pages for “Free-Techno”.

Hellboy The Wild Hunt

Ive become more and more interested in the crazy universe that Mike Mignola has been creating for over 10 years in the pages of Hellboy and B.P.R.D. Though it started out as a series I read because I heard it was good, across the past few trade paperbacks, it has truly gelled into a series with which I am utterly in love. Perhaps it was the delay between my reading of each volume or a new cosmic awareness that Ive recently developed. Whatever the case, the latest volume of Hellboy is all kinds of awesome.



The story of "The Wild Hunt" picks up pretty closely after the end of the last volume, "Darkness Calls", with our titular hero visiting old haunts in England and the witches of the world preparing for war with humanity. Hellboy is invited to take part in a giant-killing party, the Wild Hunt, following which much unrelated to the actual giant killing ensues. As Hellboys journey to discover more about himself unfolds, Hellboy himself continues to evolve as one of the more three-dimensional characters in comics. Though he started as a "Its Clobberin Time"-sort of paranormal investigator, Hellboy has become increasingly conflicted in his role on Earth. Can he really ever be human? Should he even try to be? And while Hellboy grows, so too do his supporting characters, especially the Grugach, a tortured fairy stuck in the body of a pig. Watching Grugach foment war against the world simply to carry out his own increasingly impotent revenge fantasy is almost heart-wrenching.

Mignola continues to grow as a master of pacing and though he is no longer the artist of his creation, Duncan Fegredo continues to keep his work Mignola-esque enough to capture the dark, forboding nature of what has always been a horror comic. Yet, as well as being a horror comic, Hellboy serves as a modern fairy tale; at times it reads like the awesomest Grimm/Anderson fan-fiction battle royale ever!



Well, that actually sounds kind of lame...but trust me. For story fans, you get your moneys worth with each collection. If youve never read Hellboy, you better go back and purchase 20 volumes of it and its companion book B.P.R.D. Read them all, then pick "The Wild Hunt" up. It and the series as a whole is decidedly Amazing.

The Other Guys

Its another sloppy impromptu mash-up from Adam McKay and Will Ferrell!  Guess where this review is going?

"The Other Guys" stars Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell as cops, one with an embarrassing mark on his jacket, the other with a dark past.  That sound like an interesting set-up...and it is, with some funny twists.  The two cops are at the bottom of the barrel and when supercops The Rock and Samuel L. Jackson buy it, the two of them embark on a case that could move them up to the big time.  And various jokes ensue.

This is not a good cop movie.  Nor is it a great comedy.  It has a number of funny parts, but the humor isnt at all plot-based, which might be a good thing since few scenes are ruined by bad concepts...though few are saved by humor as well.  Some jokes hit hard and some jokes fall hard.  Your enjoyment or disappointment in one scene will probably veer back and forth  This is a much better movie than their previous collaboration, "Step Brothers" in that the plot does make sense and does go somewhere, though its a bit of a sloppy journey.  Are these two good cops in need of a break? Are they consummate screw-ups? Should I care since this is just a stupid comedy?

The jokes come fast and furious, which is good since they only hit about 50-60% of the time.  The best ones involve Wahlberg (who is pretty funny in this) and Ferrell yelling at each other, including an amazing comeback involving devious tuna and lions.  Michael Keaton deserves some recognition as the hard-nosed captain moonlighting as a Bed, Bath, and Beyond manager with a penchant for TLC.  While the hit-miss ratio is a bit too even, when the jokes were funny, I laughed out loud.  When they didnt, I wasnt annoyed...just not moved to be amused.

"Say hi to your mother for me"

If McKay and Ferrell want to up their game, they might need to take a page from Apatow comedies (or even some of their older films like "Talladega Nights" or "Anchorman") in either tightening the narrative or upping the absurdity factor of the films characters.  "The Other Guys" would have worked so much better with an anchorman showdown! As it, it was OK.

This Is Not Good News For Obamacare Or The Nation

November 11, 2013 Reuters is reporting that:

Nov 11 (Reuters) - President Barack Obamas healthcare reform has reached only about 3 percent of its enrollment target for 2014 in 12 U.S. states where new online health insurancemarketplaces are mostly working smoothly, a report released on Monday said.

States with functioning exchanges have signed up 49,100 people compared with the 1.4 million people expected to be enrolled for 2014, according to the report by healthcare research and consultancy firm Avalere Health.

This is bad news for Obamacare because it means that those who signed up are likely to be ones who are older, with pre-existing conditions -- the ones who are expensive for the insurers to take care of.  The ones who are necessary to make the exchanges financial sound are people who are young people, and those without pre-existing conditions.  The net effect is likely to be a "death spiral" where insurers have to raise rates to cover expenses, which will drive even more prospective customers into deciding to pay the penalty instead.

This is bad news for the country as a whole, because the costs are going to be picked up by the federal government, I am quite sure.  I have given up any hope that the Republicans will be able to do anything useful with this.  The RNC seems more interested in electing Democrats than in electing conservative Republicans, and the TEA Party sorts are pretty much irrelevant to politics as a result.

That article has some really scary news: Manufacturers are using flame-retardant chemicals in the foam padding of a lot of furniture, office and home, that (a) does not work(!) and (b) poisons us as we use it and definitely if it burns.

As a member of our corporate health and safety committee for some years, I had the privilege of attending a seminar by the fire department with a film showing the speed at which an office will burn once it gets going (and your house) …

If I recall correctly, you have about 2 minutes before everyone is at risk of imminent death. This because all furniture is horrifically toxic when it burns.

So if you smell smoke in your house, you look for the point source to see what you can do. I hope you keep fire extinguishers up to date just in case. But … if you feel heat or see a lot of smoke, you have seconds or minutes to get everyone out. The place is probably toast and you don’t want to go with it.

I think it is criminal that the furniture we all have in our houses will kill us even if the flames do not. But such is the world we live in. No doubt someone makes a fortune on these chemicals, so who are we to deny the rich their enormous bounty
